There are various things which can affect the taste of your coffee. The particular type of beans being used to create it will have the largest impact on its taste. However, roasting can alter the final taste of it too.
You have most likely heard of the terms like roast and dark roast. Both of these two very different types come from the same type of beans. As usual, Arabica beans are the most sought after type since they produce the best taste. Although Robusta are lower quality, they can also be used to create dark roast coffee.
In order to produce this type of coffee, the beans will need to be roasted for a longer period of time. A higher roasting temperature may also be used too. The longer the beans are roasted, the more the chemicals which cause bitterness are broken down. That is why dark roast coffee typically taste more sugary and smooth.
The longer roasting times to yield dark roast coffee do not always offer advantages though. Longer roasting times can break down bad chemicals, but they can also help get rid of those that create good flavors too. Also, more acids and oils are gotten rid of too.
If you frequently like to drink dark roast coffee, then it helps to be a bit knowledgeable about coffee in general. The darker the coffee is roasted, the easier it will be to mask the use of lower quality beans. Coffee companies take advantage of this fact and often use lower quality beans for this type of coffee. Make sure that no matter what type of roast you like, that high-quality beans are being used.
Many people drink coffee because of its high caffeine content. You should be aware that roasting breaks down the amount of caffeine that is in your coffee. Therefore, dark roast coffee will have less caffeine than that its lighter counterparts.
Coffee also has a reputation for being particularly hard on the stomach. If you have problems with your digestive system, you may avoid drinking coffee because of it. You should know that dark roast coffee has less acidity. Therefore, you will experience less digestive system problems if you prefer this type of coffee.
Everyone likes their own different types of coffee. The choice between light and dark roast coffee is entirely up to you. Darker roast will be a bit smoother, but likely will not be as flavorful.
