To the Moon and Beyond With Neil deGrasse Tyson, Buzz Aldrin, and Friends

When comedian Eugene Mirman introduced Neil deGrasse Tyson to the stage of NYC's Town Hall for Star Talk Live, he referred to him as the "Robert Plant of Astrophysics." Sure enough, Tyson strutted out with his shirt half-buttoned to curry the audience's favor.

Such an entrance set the scene for Wednesday night's event, in which Mirman and Tyson were joined by John Oliver of The Daily Show, space journalist Andrew Chaikin, and the one and only Buzz Aldrin. Here's what we learned, other than the fact that Tyson can moonwalk with the best of them.

Neil Armstrong Was a Camera Hog

Seemingly delighted at the opportunity to wisecrack with professional comedians, Buzz Aldrin was more than happy to tell the audience about his stint on the surface of the moon. Tyson asked him if it was true that Aldrin was the astronaut shown in all the photos from the 1969 landing, as Armstrong had been the photographer.

"He wouldn't let go of the camera!" Aldrin said.

The astronaut later recalled that he had spent 5 minutes or so prancing around outside, moving in different ways, assuming that NASA would look at the footage to see if all the physics were as they'd expected. No one looked at it or even asked him why he'd spent all that time skipping around. A few years ago a scientist decided to do the calculations, and Aldrin was pleased to find out that his smooth moves were all just as science would have predicted.

But don't try to tell Buzz Aldrin about the moon. Even a simple statement such as "There's no noise on the moon," from an expert like Tyson had Aldrin up in arms, saying, "How do you know there's no noise? Have you been there?"

Why Buzz Really Became an Astronaut

John Oliver pointed out that as a diver and an astronaut, Aldrin must "really hate the surface of the earth." Tyson added that in his day, Aldrin was quite the pole-vaulter.

"During the post-moon tour, we got to find out what the best motorcycles in every country were. But that wasn't important. This was 1969. We also got to find out where the miniskirts were shortest."

Communist Jokes Just Won't Go Away

Following Aldrin's talk about how getting to the moon was about being first, Mirman quipped: "Were you hoping there would be a Russian on the moon when you got there so you could punch him?" Buzz just chuckled, and would neither confirm nor deny his desire to clock Alexey Leonov.

And to the notion that our space success was "just a reaction" to Russia's, Aldrin replied: "Our reaction was pretty ***damn good." The general consensus was that we just couldn't have done it without the drive to beat the Soviet Union. "If only bin Laden had been hiding on Mars." Tyson moaned.

Is Everything Going to Be Okay?

During the Q&A, talk turned to recent meteors, and a debate began between Aldrin and Tyson. To Aldrin, humans need to get off the planet to avoid destruction. Tyson countered that it couldn't possibly cost more to just learn how to deflect space rocks.

"Just give them enough money to do both!" Oliver shrieked, before raising his hand and softly asking Tyson, "Is everything going to be okay?" Ultimately, Oliver offered up his own solution: "Give all the money to Bruce Willis. He's done it once, he'll do it again."

There's Your Answer

It wouldn't be Star Talk without some out-of-the-blue profundity from Tyson. During an argument with Chaikin on whether or not a 2018 Mars trip could happen, he turned to Aldrin.

"Did we know how to get to the moon in '62?" he asked. Aldrin shook his head. "Then there's your answer!" He shouted at Chaikin. "To dream! Columbus didn't know where he was going."

Citation characteristics in the Arts & Humanities - Research Trends

The main topic addressed in this article is how frequently authors cite documents that are more than 15 years old and how Humanities journals compare to Science journals in this respect. As current scientific publications become available more quickly and readily over web-based databases, it?s becoming important to test how older publications, which might not be as interactive or available as their newer counterparts, are cited, at what rate, and which disciplines cite relatively newer research compared to others that might cite older articles. In addition, the age of the cited references has the potential to reveal which factors influence such choices and whether they are ?time dependent? or ?field dependent? (1). Within the time-dependent factors, Bornmann and Daniel (1) point to two separate trends that emerge from the literature: citations of more current articles, mainly due to the fact that there are more of them; and a tendency to cite papers that received a large amount of citations on the basis of their acceptance and popularity. In this article, we focus more on studying the former phenomenon, examining whether recent articles are cited more and in what disciplines this phenomenon is more apparent. Therefore, this study hypothesizes that certain scientific disciplines such as Medicine and Engineering cite more current research articles, while others such as Arts & Humanities, Economics and Mathematics cite older research.

?

Data Collection & Methodology

We randomly selected a corpus of 63 journals from 14 disciplines (see Appendix A) and collected the following data fields for the analysis:

  1. Journal Title
  2. Year Started ? the year the journal first appeared
  3. Total number of articles published up to 2011
  4. Total number of references within each journal, per year from its start-time to the present
  5. Total number of references to articles dated before 1996 (per journal per year)
  6. Total number of references? to articles dated post 1995 (per journal per year)
  7. The journal?s main discipline - The disciplinary assignment of each journal was derived from the Scopus database which assigns a discipline to each source it covers. In many cases, Scopus will assign more than one discipline to each source. In such cases, we selected the 1st discipline as the main subject area to which a journal belongs.
  8. Topics covered in the journal ? the topic lists were retrieved from the journal?s aims and scope.

?

Findings

Average number of references per article

We calculated the average of the number of references per article for each of the disciplines. As can be seen from Figure 1, the journals in Social Sciences, Arts & Humanities and Physics and Astronomy have the largest average number of references per article while the lowest average number of references per article occurs in the titles covering Health Professions and Earth and Planetary Sciences.

Figure 1: The average number of references per article per discipline

In addition we looked at the average number of references per article in the six A&H journals in our sample. These journals include Journal of Medieval History, Lingua, Poetics, Design Studies, Journal of Phonetics, and Journal of Cultural Heritage. We found that History related journals have the largest references per article, followed by journals related to Linguistics, while the smallest number of references occurred in Poetics.

Percentage of references dated 1996 and after

We calculated the percentage of references dated 1996 to the present, per discipline according to the journals? disciplinary assignment and then averaged these citations per discipline (see Figure 2). Examining the references, we found that 60% of the references cited in the A&H journals in our study sample are new, meaning the articles referenced were published in 1996 or after. Examining the six A&H journals individually we found that history related journals tend to reference newer publications while linguistics related journals tend to reference older publications. Disciplines covered by journals in this study showing 70%-80% references to articles published post-1995 are Earth and Planetary Sciences, Medicine, Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology, Engineering, and Materials Science. However, articles in our A&H titles reference newer materials when compared to study journals in disciplines such as Mathematics with 40% newer references, Social Sciences (45%), Agriculture (47%) and Computer Science (50%). This finding is quite notable considering that A&H content is considered to develop over time and where ?the masters are continually discussed? (2).

Disciplinary growth and references age

The finding that 60% of cited references in the A&H journals in our study set are new, i.e., published after 1995, led us to examine the overall growth rate of the number of articles in our journal sets arranged by discipline, and attempt to find out whether growth rate correlates to the references age. The rationale here was that in fast growing disciplines, where articles are published more often and in larger numbers, the age of references will be younger mainly because there are more recent materials available. In slower growing disciplines, on the other hand, the expectation was that the age of the references will be older because there are not as many new materials available. In order to analyze this, we compared the overall article growth in each of the disciplines from 1960 to the present. As can be seen from Figure 3, the fastest growing disciplines are Medicine and Engineering and these are also the disciplines that have the younger references age. A&H growth is much slower, yet its references are fairly new (i.e. post 1995).

Figure 3: Overall disciplinary growth over 5-year intervals

?

Conclusions

The Arts & Humanities journals in our sample show a relatively large number of references per article with an average of almost 56 references. When examining the average number of references per article in the A&H journals in our sample, we found that History has the largest amount of references per article, followed by journals related to Linguistics. The smallest number of references per article was seen in Poetics. In this respect it is compatible with Social Sciences and Physics and Astronomy, which show similar reference per article ratios. Despite their fairly slow growth rate, especially when compared to Medicine or Engineering, A&H articles tend to reference newer articles (i.e. published after 1996) in approximately 60% of the cases. This discipline, which was traditionally considered as building upon older materials, actually shows a relatively high number of references to newer materials. This finding is contrary to our initial hypothesis, which assumed that A&H articles will reference older materials, especially when the ?classics? have been assumed to be used often. For the six A&H journals in our sample, Journal of Medieval History, Lingua, Poetics, Design Studies, Journal of Phonetics, and Journal of Cultural Heritage, the percentage of post-1995 cited references is 44%, 63%, 69%, 73%, 62% and 72%, respectively. It follows that for all journals except the first this percentage is compatible with that in source titles covering Physics and Astronomy, Environmental Sciences and Business and Management, which show approximately 65% references to materials published after 1996.

?

Limitations and Further Research

This study was conducted using a small sample of 63 journals. In order to test the findings in this study, a much larger scale is needed and therefore it is necessary to analyze more journals per discipline. In a larger study, it will be important to include at least 20 journals per discipline in order to have a sufficient amount of journals and citations to analyze.

In addition, a comparison between different databases is important. Each database covers citations differently. Thus, comparing Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar, for example, can provide a better understanding of the differences in citation coverage and how these influence the way each discipline is perceived.

Finally, a more granular approach to the disciplinary and topical analysis is needed. In today?s research landscape, where many journals are becoming more interdisciplinary, it will be of significance to analyze sub-topics and their citations behavior and make the differentiation between them.

Prehistoric warming linked to CO2

A study of 20,000- to 10,000-year-old?Antarctic ice indicates that a rise in temperatures was driven by natural carbon dioxide emissions. ??

Rising carbon dioxide levels may have caused Antarctic warming in the past, new research strongly suggests.

The findings, published today (Feb. 28) in the journal Science, just add to the body of evidence that human-caused greenhouse gas emissions will lead to?climate change.

"It's new evidence from the past of the strong role of CO2 [carbon dioxide] in climate variation," said study co-author Fr?d?ric Parrenin, a climate scientist at the CNRS in France.

Past data

Eons of the Earth's climate history are revealed deep within ice sheets in the Arctic and Antarctic. The?Antarctic ice?traps gas bubbles from the climate that can reveal what the ancient atmosphere looked like, while the ice itself can reveal historical temperatures.

But gas bubbles from a given period get buried deeper than ice of the same period, making it hard to tie past temperatures with atmospheric changes.

In the past, scientists using older techniques found that increases in carbon dioxide happened after global warming, not the reverse. [Images of Melt: Earth's Vanishing Ice]

Past link

But Parrenin and his colleagues wondered whether that was actually the case. To answer that question, the team looked at five ice cores that had been drilled from?Antarctica?over the last 30 years.

They focused on ice from 20,000 to 10,000 years ago, which encompassed the last period when the planet warmed naturally and glaciers melted.

The team measured the concentration of nitrogen-15 isotopes, or atoms of the same element with different weights, at different depths throughout the?ice cores. They compared the depth of that isotope with the ice composition for all the cores to determine the distance between ice bubbles and ice from the same period.

Global warming

The team found that global warming and a carbon dioxide increase happened at virtually the same time ? between 18,000 and 11,000 years ago.

"It makes it possible that CO2 was the cause ? at least partly ? of the temperature increase during the courses of the last glaciation," Parrenin told LiveScience.

And if increased carbon dioxide could lead to?rising temperatures?in the past, it also can in the present day, he said.

The findings may deflate some?climate skeptics, who used the poor dating of ice cores to question the link between carbon dioxide and warming, said Robert Mulvaney, a glaciologist with the British Antarctic Survey, who was not involved in the study.

It also confirmed the view of most climate scientists that in the past, rising temperatures and carbon dioxide were locked in a feedback loop, where high temperatures led to more carbon dioxide being released from the deep oceans, which increased temperatures further, Mulvaney said.

But because predictions of future warming are based on recent carbon dioxide and temperature data, not historical models, "it hasn't really changed anything about our understanding of how climate change will change our modern environment." Mulvaney told LiveScience.

JPMorgan raises questions about lawyer at New York AG's office

NEW YORK (Reuters) - JPMorgan Chase & Co has raised questions about the involvement of a senior lawyer from the New York Attorney General's office in one of the few government lawsuits alleging wrongdoing by banks in the run-up to the financial crisis.

The case against JPMorgan is similar to one that the lawyer had worked on before joining the Attorney General's office, JPMorgan said in court papers this week, raising the possibility of a conflict of interest.

JPMorgan said it had asked New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman "whether there is additional information about this lawyer's involvement ... before deciding what further action is warranted."

The bank did not specify what action it could take, but legal experts said JPMorgan could argue that the New York Attorney General's office had a conflict of interest.

Schneiderman's office did not immediately comment on JPMorgan's request for information.

JPMorgan's court filing did not identify the lawyer by name but gave the title of executive deputy attorney general for economic justice - the position held by former Paterson Belknap Webb & Tyler partner Karla Sanchez.

While at Paterson Belknap, Sanchez helped bring a case by bond insurer Ambac against JPMorgan over the sale of toxic assets by its Bear Stearns unit before the financial crisis.

Schneiderman brought the new, similar case against JPMorgan in October.

Sanchez joined Schneiderman's team in January 2011. On June 7, 2011, the AG's office barred her from working on its probe of mortgage-backed securities, citing her work in private practice, according to documents obtained by Reuters under New York's Freedom of Information Law.

The AG's office lifted the restriction on April 23, 2012, according to the documents, allowing her to work on the Bear Stearns investigation.

Six months later, on November 9, 2012, she was once again banned from certain mortgage-backed securities cases, according to the documents. In its court filing this week, JPMorgan said the attorney general's office apparently reimposed the ban after the bank raised concerns.

Sanchez did not respond to a request to comment on her involvement in the case.

James Freedland, a spokesman for Schneiderman, said recusal decisions are based on the facts at any given time. "These decisions were made not only out of an abundance of caution, but also based on changing circumstances," Freedland told Reuters in December.

Bennett Gershman, an expert on prosecutorial misconduct at Pace University Law School, called it "highly unusual" for a lawyer in the attorney general's office to be recused from working on a probe, then back on the case, and then recused again.

"I think a judge would be seriously concerned," he said.

JPMorgan could bring a motion to disqualify Schneiderman's office from the case, Gershman said. The bank could argue that an irreparable conflict of interest exists, he said.

It is unclear which other probes of mortgage-backed securities Sanchez has worked on.

Schneiderman filed a similar lawsuit against Credit Suisse in November. Patterson Belknap had also sued Credit Suisse on behalf of Ambac.

The New York Attorney General case is People v. J.P. Morgan Securities LLC, 451556/2012 New York state Supreme Court (New York County).

The private lawsuit is Ambac Assurance Corporation v. EMC Mortgage LLC, 650421/2011, New York state Supreme Court (New York County).

Sun's next-door twin: Cool layer in the atmosphere of Alpha Centauri A

Feb. 20, 2013 ? The European Space Agency's Herschel space observatory has detected a cool layer in the atmosphere of Alpha Centauri A, the first time this has been seen in a star beyond our own Sun. The finding is not only important for understanding the Sun's activity, but could also help in the quest to discover proto-planetary systems around other stars.

The Sun's nearest neighbours are the three stars of the Alpha Centauri system. The faint red dwarf, Proxima Centauri, is nearest at just 4.24 light-years, with the tight double star, Alpha Centauri AB, slightly further away at 4.37 light-years.

Alpha Centauri B has recently been in the news after the discovery of an Earth-mass planet in orbit around it. But Alpha Centauri A is also very important to astronomers: almost a twin to the Sun in mass, temperature, chemical composition and age, it provides an ideal natural laboratory to compare other characteristics of the two stars.

One of the great curiosities in solar science is that the Sun's wispy outer atmosphere -- the corona -- is heated to millions of degrees while the visible surface of the Sun is 'only' about 6000?C. Even stranger, there is a temperature minimum of about 4000?C between the two layers, just a few hundred kilometres above the visible surface in the part of Sun's atmosphere called the chromosphere.

Both layers can be seen during a total solar eclipse, when the Moon briefly blocks the bright face of the Sun: the chromosphere is a pink-red ring around the Sun, while the ghostly white plasma streamers of the corona extend out millions of kilometres.

The heating of the Sun's atmosphere has been a conundrum for many years, but is likely to be related to the twisting and snapping of magnetic field lines sending energy rippling through the atmosphere and out into space -- possibly in the direction of Earth -- as solar storms. Why there is a temperature minimum has also long been of interest to solar scientists.

Now, by observing Alpha Centauri A in far-infrared light with Herschel and comparing the results with computer models of stellar atmospheres, scientists have made the first discovery of an equivalent cool layer in the atmosphere of another star.

"The study of these structures has been limited to the Sun until now, but we clearly see the signature of a similar temperature inversion layer at Alpha Centauri A," says Ren? Liseau of the Onsala Space Observatory, Sweden, and lead author of the paper presenting the results.

"Detailed observations of this kind for a variety of stars might help us decipher the origin of such layers and the overall atmospheric heating puzzle."

Migratory behavior of oceanic whitetip sharks revealed

Feb. 20, 2013 ? As the nations of the world prepare to vote on measures to restrict international trade in endangered sharks in early March, a team of researchers has found that one of these species -- the oceanic whitetip shark -- regularly crosses international boundaries. Efforts by individual nations to protect this declining apex predator within their own maritime borders may therefore need to be nested within broader international conservation measures.

The research team, which included researchers from Microwave Telemetry, Inc., the Cape Eleuthera Institute, and the Institute for Ocean Conservation Science at Stony Brook University, attached pop-up satellite archival tags to one male and 10 female mature oceanic whitetip sharks off Cat Island in The Bahamas in May 2011, and monitored the sharks for varying intervals up to 245 days. The tags recorded depth, temperature, and location for pre-programmed periods of time. At the end of the time period, the tags self-detached from the sharks, and reported the data to orbiting satellites.

Their findings, published online February 20 in the journal PLOS ONE, show that some of these sharks roamed nearly 2,000 kilometers from the spot where they were caught, but all individuals returned to The Bahamas within a few months.

"While the oceanic whitetip shark is one of the most severely overexploited shark species, it is also among the least studied because it lives much of its life far from land in the open ocean," said Lucy Howey-Jordan, scientific liaison for Microwave Telemetry, Inc. and lead author. "Before this study and our ongoing research, very few of these sharks had been fitted with satellite tags, and the data we obtained will help establish new conservation measures."

All the tags, except the one attached to the male shark, reported data. Of the eight tagged oceanic whitetip sharks tracked for more than 31 days, three stayed within or very near The Bahamas Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) for their entire tracking period. The other five sharks, after an approximate 30-day period of residency within 500 kilometers of the tagging area, made long-distance movements outside of the EEZ, with one traveling as far as Bermuda. The fact that all these tagged mature female sharks returned to The Bahamas provides the first evidence of return-migration in this species. Additional findings that were surprising to the scientists included the sharks spending an average of 68 percent of the monitored time in Bahamian waters, and that these sharks, normally found near the ocean's surface, made dives of approximately 1,000 meters, possibly related to feeding behavior.

"Although these sharks are relatively safe from fishing in Bahamian waters, our study shows their long-range roaming takes them across the boundaries of different countries and into the high seas where they still encounter fishing gear set for other species," said Dr. Demian Chapman, an assistant professor in the School of Marine and Atmospheric Sciences and assistant director of science at the Institute for Ocean Conservation at Stony Brook University. "If we want to continue to see these animals in our oceans, fishing nations will have to work together to protect this species, and monitoring of trade and enforcement measures will need to be coordinated on an international level."

Once considered among the most abundant apex predators on Earth, overfishing has caused huge declines in oceanic whitetip sharks, and the species is listed as "Critically Endangered" in the Northwest Atlantic and Western Central Atlantic, and "Vulnerable" globally by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. The fins of these sharks can be sold for $90 per kilogram because of the high demand for their use in shark fin soup, a delicacy in Chinese culture. There is growing international interest in improving the conservation of these sharks, including a proposal to list this species in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), which will be considered at its upcoming Conference of Parties meeting in Bangkok, Thailand, March 3-14 of this year.

World renowned for its healthy shark populations and proactive conservation stance, The Bahamas is one of the few places left in the world where this open-ocean species can be found in relatively large numbers. In July 2011, during the timeframe of this study, The Bahamas banned all commercial fishing of sharks throughout the 630,000 square kilometers of surrounding ocean waters. The sharks now benefit from this protection, and the shark diving industry, a major contributor to the Bahamian economy, benefits from their presence in surrounding waters. Additionally, recent studies have shown ecosystem health is dependant, in part, on the presence of apex predators like sharks.

"The Bahamian government had the foresight to protect these and other species of sharks within their waters, starting with the longline fishing ban in early 90s, and culminating with the more recent shark sanctuary initiative," said Edd Brooks, program manager of the Shark Research and Conservation Program at the Cape Eleuthera Institute. "This level of protection is vital for the continued existence of these important apex predators, and I hope that the example set by The Bahamas will encourage other nations to follow suit."

This research was funded by Microwave Telemetry, Inc., the Cape Eleuthera Foundation, The Pew Charitable Trusts, and the Roe Foundation.

These Tiny Telescopes Could Save the Earth from a Deep Impact

A 50-foot wide, 10,000-ton meteor that packs triple the force of the nuke dropped on Hiroshima is nothing to scoff at. But in the grand scheme of things, the meteor that hit Chelyabinsk, Russia, last week is a cosmological runt. Space rocks as much as 100 feet across are estimated to strike every hundred years or so and those like the 160-foot diameter Tunguska meteor of 1908 hit maybe once a century. More »

KDDI Remote TV delivers Blu-ray DVR video to PCs and smartphones

KDDI Remote TV controls and streams Bluray DVRs, has us packing our bags for Japan

Sure, it's possible to get remote access to home theater devices through raw methods like a Slingbox, but KDDI has a slightly more elegant solution for those living in Japan. Its tiny Remote TV box puts a Blu-ray DVR on the local WiFi network to both schedule recordings while away and stream the video itself. Locals can watch from a Mac, Windows PC or Android device, although they'll be limited to 480p when they're outside of the home. iOS support is coming soon, the carrier says. KDDI ships the device on February 23rd for an estimated ¥19,800 ($213) and is keen to note that it doesn't require a subscription -- it sees Remote TV more as an incentive to splurge on smartphone data, which just might work for commuters wanting to catch up on their shows.

Acer outs Liquid E1 and Liquid Z2 smartphones ahead of MWC

Introducing the first two handsets of Acer's 2013 line-up: the Liquid E1 and the Liquid Z2. The company formally announced the Liquid E1 last month, but with Mobile World Congress around the corner, the mid-range phone just got official for the European market. The E1 packs a dual-core 1GHz processor and runs Jelly Bean on a 4.5-inch qHD display -- and, notably, it will be available in both dual- and single-SIM configurations. Acer is marketing the E1 as a multimedia-friendly handset, and accordingly it includes two speakers with DTS Sound, plus "Float" software that prevents notifications from popping up when you're watching videos.

The Liquid Z2, on the other hand, is an entry-level handset with a dual-core 1GHz CPU and a 3.5-inch HVGA screen. It runs Jelly Bean with an optional interface that mimics a feature phone's home screen. Like the E1, it's available with one or two SIM cards, and you have your choice of a 3-megapixel or 5-MP camera.

Pricing isn't set in stone, but Acer told us the Liquid E1 will be in the €199 to €229 range, while the Z2 should cost between €99 and €129. Both phones will first go on sale in Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Ukraine, with availability in Italy, Russia and the UK coming later. We'll deliver the hands-on goods in Barcelona, but for now you can peruse the press info after the break.

(AP) ? Google's stock price topped $800 for the first time Tuesday amid renewed confidence in the company's ability to reap steadily higher profits from its dominance of Internet search and prominence in the increasingly important mobile device market.

The milestone comes more than five years after Google's shares initially hit $700. Not long after breaking that barrier in October 2007, the economy collapsed into the worst recession since World War II and Google's stock tumbled into a prolonged malaise that eventually led to a change in leadership.

Besides enriching Google's employees and other shareholders, the company's resurgent stock is an implicit endorsement of co-founder Larry Page. He replaced his managerial mentor, Eric Schmidt, as CEO in April 2011. Google's stock has risen by about 35 percent since Page took over. By contrast, the benchmark Standard & Poor's 500 index has climbed by 15 percent over the same stretch. Most of Google's gains have occurred in the past seven months.

In morning trading, Google's stock was at $801.99, up 1.2 percent, or $9.10.

The significance of crossing the $800 threshold is largely symbolic. If Google had its way, the stock wouldn't even be priced near these levels. The company, which is based in Mountain View, Calif., had hoped to split its stock last year in a move that would have at least temporarily halved the trading price by doubling the total number of outstanding shares. But the proposed stock split was put on hold until Google resolves a shareholder lawsuit alleging that the stock split unfairly cedes too much power to Page and fellow co-founder Sergey Brin. Page and Brin have been the company's largest shareholders since its inception. A trial on the lawsuit is scheduled to begin June 17 in a Delaware state court.

Assuming more investors wouldn't have bought the stock had it split, the company's market value probably wouldn't have changed from its current level of about $265 billion.

There is little dispute among analysts that Google appears well positioned for many years of prosperity. The reasons: Its Internet search engine remains the hub of the Web's biggest marketing network; its YouTube video site has established itself as an increasingly attractive advertising vehicle; and its free Android software is running on more than 600 million smartphones and tablet computers to create even more opportunities to sell ads.

The lower prices attached to mobiles ads have raised recurring concerns on Wall Street about the decline in the average rate paid for ads that run alongside Google's search results. The company, though, is trying to reverse the trend with upcoming changes to its ad system that will prod more marketers to buy mobile ads when they are creating campaigns for desktop and laptop computers.

Opinions about Google weren't as upbeat a few years ago. Although Google weathered the Great Recession better than most companies, its revenue growth slowed and its stock plummeted to as low as $247.30 near the end of 2008.

Things looked so bleak in 2009 that Google took the rare step of re-pricing stock options that had been doled out to its employees to give them a chance to make more money when the shares rebounded. The program allowed Google workers to swap their old stock options for new ones with an exercise price of about $308.

Even after the economy snapped out of the recession toward the end of 2009, Google's stock began to lag the rest of the market. Investors began to wonder if the company was losing its competitive age as it morphed from a hard-charging startup to giant organization with thousands of employees working in dozens of offices scattered around the world.

At the same time, Facebook was emerging as the Internet's fastest growing company in a meteoric rise. The social networking company had some people convinced it would eventually become a more important advertising vehicle than Google's search engine.

Perceptions have changed since Page became CEO. Under Page's leadership, Google has streamlined its decision-making and operations while closing dozens of services. It established its own toehold in social networking with the 2011 introduction of Google Plus.

Meanwhile, Facebook Inc. has lost much of the luster that made its initial public offering of stock one of the biggest in U.S. history. Since going public at $38, Facebook's stock has sunk 25 percent.

By contrast, Google's stock has never slipped below its August 2004 IPO price of $85.

New material interface improves functioning of non-silicon-based electronic devices

Feb. 17, 2013 ? For the first time, researchers have designed a special material interface that has been shown to add to and to improve the functioning of non-silicon-based electronic devices, such as those used in certain kinds of random access memory (RAM). According to Qi Li, a professor of physics at Penn State University and the leader of the research team, the new method could be used to design improved, more-efficient, multilevel and multifunctional devices, as well as enhanced nanoelectronic components -- such as non-volatile information storage and processing; and spintronic components -- an emerging technology that uses the natural spin of the electron to power devices.

The research has been accepted for publication in the journal Nature Materials.

Li explained that most modern-day electronic chips -- integrated circuits that serve as the building blocks for semiconductor electronic devices such as solar cells, personal computers, and cell phones -- use silicon transistors to process "logical states," or the binary system of ones and zeros used by computers. This binary information is stored for fast access in RAM and also permanently in a magnetic form on hard disks. In this system, the numeral 1 can be understood as "on" -- with a current of electrons flowing freely -- and the numeral 0 as "off" -- with a current blocked. However, in recent years, Li said, researchers in laboratories across the world have been experimenting with different, non-silicon materials that "can toggle between a multilevel state system and can bring the memory into logic operation," and also function with greater speed and less power consumption than are possible with current technology.

Now, in a new research study, Li and her colleagues have designed and tested an alternative way of creating a device that is compatible with non-silicon technology and that combines into one device both an electronic and a magnetic junction. "Magnetic tunnel junctions -- which include two magnetic metallic layers with a very thin insulator barrier in between -- have been used for binary-state devices, such as magnetic random-access memories (MRAM). Tunneling itself is a quantum-mechanical effect," Li said. "Our goal was to create a multifunctional device with improved function by adding what we call a ferroelectric-magnetic interface -- a ferroelectric layer replacing the insulator barrier and a special interface layer, less than one nanometer thick, built into the device that acts to change from metal to insulator as well as from ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic in response to the negative or positive charge polarization of the barrier." Thanks to this interface and through a phenomenon called the tunneling electroresistance effect, Li said, "we have found that the binary-state resistance difference, or the 1/0 system, is enhanced by up to 10,000 percent. This device is considered a quaternary-state device because we have integrated ferroelectric tunneling -- which can be used as a switch or memory -- into magnetic tunnel junctions, a type of magnetic memory."

Li added that her team's newly designed interface is special because the oxide materials used to build it are "multiferroic" -- one side magnetic and the other ferroelectric, with the magnetic layer changing with the ferroelectric switching. Ferroelectric materials, which are used in the capacitors built into medical ultrasound machines, as well as in other memory devices such as hotel key cards, have a spontaneous electric polarization of negative and positive charges that can be reversed. On the other hand, ferromagnetic materials, such as iron, form permanent magnets with magnetization direction also reversible. "Because our new interface combines both magnetic and ferroelectric properties and because we utilize the coupling effect between the two, we can reproduce a similar binary system with a much larger resistance difference between the two charge-polarization directions. With future modifications, faster switching and storage, or toggling, between 1 and 0 with the information also stored in the same device (or between the states of 1, 2, 3, and 4) may be possible," Li said. "With a 10,000-percent enhancement, the 1 is a stronger 1 and the 0 is a stronger 0, thanks to the physical properties of the materials used to build the interface structures. Stronger 1s and 0s mean sharper switching or fewer memory errors and better and faster information processing and storage power."

Li said that non-silicon materials that use enhanced tunneling-electroresistance-effect technology may be many years away from being available in personal computers and cell phones. However, her research is a next step toward demonstrating the feasibility of this technology. "A few of the exciting outcomes of a multiferroic interface built into tunnel junctions would be doubling the memory states from two to four, a switch and a memory in one chip, and electrical control of the magnetic devices. For example, a new generation of non-volatile multilevel data processing and storage would be possible with the combined memory of MRAM and ferroelectric RAM (fRAM) or logic operation." Li said.

Li explained that memory is considered non-volatile if it is stored even when it is not powered. "Most computers use dynamic random-access memory (dRAM) -- a form of computer data storage in which stored information fades from the capacitor unless it is refreshed periodically," Li said. "But with both MRAM and fRAM, if you shut down your computer while you are watching a video, then the video would pop back up on the screen immediately as soon as you powered the computer back on again. No restart of the window in your personal computer would be necessary."

8 Arab civilians detained by military in Timbuktu

(AP) ? Eight Arab men have been detained by the military in Timbuktu, raising fears of further reprisals against the region's Arab minority, whose members are accused of having supported the al-Qaida-linked fighters who had ruled northern Mali for most of the past year.

Witnesses late Saturday confirmed the Feb. 14 arrests.

Ibrahim Ould Ali said his 70-year-old father Ali Ould Mohamed Kalbali was taken from his shop. Mariam Mint Elbakaye, a merchant's wife, said her husband Mohamed Ould Mohamed Lamine was grabbed by soldiers while in the street. A neighbor said two brothers were taken by the army from their home and another resident said four truck drivers were taken from the Abaradjou neighborhood.

Islamic extremists had fled Timbuktu before French and Malian forces arrived at the end of January.

YouTube Gaming Community:eDrama | Gamester 81

?

First off let me start off by mentioning that I?m a huge fan of the gaming community on YouTube. ?I?ve been apart of it since 2008, and have been making videos nearly every week since 2009. ?I?ve made some great friends, and have had the pleasure meeting up with many gamers who are apart of the community in person. ?I must say it?s actually a really cool experience to meet up with someone in person, and it feels like we?ve known each other for a long time. I?d say that 99% of the people in the gaming community are sincere people who share a great hobby and passion for gaming.

Unfortunately through the years I?ve seen a lot of eDrama as well, and I?ve witnessed channels being shut down and people poked fun of. ?I myself am not immune to the eDrama on YouTube. ?I?ve had ?trolls? make fun of my looks, what I do, and they have made personal attacks not only at me, but my family as well. ?I?ve grown accustomed to it though over the years, and generally look the other way when people make these personal attacks at me. ?It?s hard though when people make attacks at good friends of mine.

Recently some really close friends of mine who have been putting tons of time and effort into their show had asked if anyone would be willing to chip into their show. They are financially struggling and are looking to make their show their full time gig. ?They don?t have the financial resources to purchase tools they need to help make the show better and to help it grow. ?I can appreciate their passion and dedication that they put into their show, and I know that several of their episodes alone have cost them hundreds of hours in editing and time.

Many people think that YouTube Adsense pays the big bucks. ?Unfortunately that?s not true in most cases. ?I personally am fortunate to have a full time day job and have Gamester81 as a hobby that I too hope continues to grow and get bigger. Would I love for it to become full time? Absolutely, but I have a long way to go before it ever gets there, and realize that it may never get to that point. ?Every cent that I make from Adsense for me personally is put back into my show. ?I was able to buy a new camera a year ago, I recently purchased new?lavalier?mics to help with my audio and it helps with my travel expenses for trips like PAX and Classic Gaming Expo in Vegas. ?A lot of my personal money is also put into the show to make it better, because not even my Adsense revenue can cover all of my expenses and time for that matter that I put into my channels.

Recently a video went up on YouTube calling these guys ?eBeggers?. Really?eBeggers? I often feel that the terms ?eBegging? and ?Sellout? are often used with very little understanding what these terms actually mean. ?What?s a ?Sellout?? Just because someone is successful, does that make them a ?Sellout?? ?What?s an ?eBegger?? ?I personally believe that an ?eBegger? is someone who asks for money with no intentions of giving back in return. ?In this situation with my friends, they had asked for donations so that they can put it back into their show. ?Which in returns provides FREE entertainment for thousands of people. ?The way I see it, it?s people?s money and they can donate or not donate if they choose. ?I saw this guy?s video, and he made personal attacks at both of these guys on their show. ?First off, who gives this guy the right to judge others? If people want to help support their show, it?s their business and not his, so he needs to move on and focus on more important matters.

The moral of this post is that eDrama can happen to anyone in the YouTube gaming community. ?I?m sure a lot of it stems from jealousy. ?My advice to anyone who may have been ?trolled? or have had harsh comments in any of their videos is to remain positive, don?t take it personal and always take the high road. ?I consider myself lucky to be apart of the YouTube gaming community, and I truly have made some awesome friends because of it. I?m not going to let some sour grapes ruin it for me or anyone else for that matter. ?Life?s too short after all.
