Google exec hints at Android 5.0?s release this year (Appolicious)

It?s enough to confuse Android fans.

The rumors continue to swirl regarding Android 5.0, the as-yet-unreleased but apparently in-the-works version of Google?s mobile operating platform. This week at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, Vice President of Engineering for Mobile Hiroshi Lockheimer mentioned the next version of the operating system while speaking with Computer World. Here?s a quote from that story:

??After Android 4 comes 5, and we haven't announced the timing yet, which we're still sorting out,? Lockheimer said. ?There's a lot of engineering work behind it still, and there's also just the question of how to time it.?

?Lockheimer added: ?In general, the Android release cadence is one major release a year with some maintenance releases that are substantial still.? That statement would suggest a fall 2012 time frame for the release of Android 5.0, given that Android 4.0 was released last November, he acknowledged.?

It?s interesting that Lockheimer mentioned Android 4.0, the latest and greatest version of Android that most users still don?t have. Google announced 4.0, code-named Ice Cream Sandwich, last year alongside the Samsung Galaxy Nexus smartphone, and it included some pretty great-sounding features that, at the time, seemed like they could really help Google in its never-ending battle against Apple and its ever-iterating iOS platform for the iPhone.

But almost five months on, Ice Cream Sandwich remains elusive for most users as carriers and device makers struggle to update and adapt, with only the Galaxy Nexus carrying the software when it?s sold at retail. Motorola recently announced that only a few of its devices would be getting ICS, and even then not until summer. Newer generation devices carry the software, but even slightly older ones, such as Samsung?s redesigned Galaxy Tab 10.1 released last year, seem like they?re falling well behind the Android curve.

So it?s likely that many users are frustrated that they?re still stuck with an old version of Android even as it seems Google is thinking about Android 5.0 releasing toward the back half of 2012. Of course, there?s a level on which yearly Android updates make sense. Google isn?t responsible for the phones, and new Android devices are released all the time, so the company doesn?t want Android to languish on the newest devices available. But what about the older ones, and the Android customers who have already signed-up?

Lockheimer said that even though the timing of Android releases suggests Fall 2012 for the launch of Android 5.0, Google isn?t going to push out an iteration of Android before it?s ready. But the implication seems to be that Google is already looking to the future, even if most users are wondering when their devices are going to catch up to the present with ICS.

Automotive Testing Expo India 6 - 8 March 2012

Scott Bittle: The Iceman Goeth: Politicians Ignore the Biggest Threat to American Jobs

As the presidential candidates spout on about jobs and the economy, I sometimes wish I could put my late grandfather on the stage during the debates. Not just because he had a low tolerance for blather, although he did, and I think the politicians would find his comments, let's say, bracing. The real reason is that his experience has more relevance to the jobs debate than most of what the politicians are talking about.

My grandfather had a job that doesn't even exist anymore. In fact, most people may never have heard of it (except via Eugene O'Neill). He was an "iceman," delivering big blocks of ice to homes and businesses in the era before refrigeration. Back then, if you wanted to keep things cold, you kept your food in an insulated icebox (essentially a big cooler). Ice men like my grandfather were daily visitors, just like the milkman or the paper carrier.

Eventually technology came out with something better, but my grandfather knew that wasn't necessarily going to be better for him. As my father used to tell it, the family was once invited to dinner during the 1930s; a dinner that ended with ice cream out of a refrigerator. An electric refrigerator.

My grandfather didn't say anything, but there was no way in hell he was going to eat that demon dessert, no matter how hard my grandmother kicked him under the table. Finally, when the hostess' back was turned, she switched dishes, putting her empty one in front of grandfather and eating the second one herself.

That kind of defiance wasn't going to hold back the refrigerator, any more than John Henry could hold off the steam hammer. By the 1950s, 80 percent of American households had refrigerators, and my grandfather was out of the ice business and back to his farm.

My grandfather was an example of the "creative destruction" of jobs that economists (and lately presidential candidates) embrace. Technology both creates and destroys jobs, usually at the same time, and ideally because a superior product came along. Refrigerators were better than iceboxes. Eventually even my grandfather admitted it. If you look at the overall economy, the loss of ice routes was more than made up by new jobs making refrigerators.

The key word in creative destruction, however, is "creative." Now we're living in another time not unlike the 1930s, with a jobs crisis that's partly a massive failure of financial markets and partly a huge technological shift in the nature of work. There's no question the Great Recession slammed the global economy. But one reason why the jobs market has been so slow to recover is that technology is enabling us to do more work with fewer people -- or with people anywhere around the world.

Ah, but your grandfather was a blue-collar worker, you may say. Those kinds of jobs are begging to be automated. If he'd gone to college, that would have been a different story.

And that's very true: if my grandfather had gone to college he probably wouldn't have been an ice man, or a farmer. But an education isn't the guaranteed haven from technological change it used to be. The working assumption that most people have -- that technology favors the smart, the creative, and the well-educated -- may not hold up any more.

Figure it this way: it's about the difference between repetitive tasks and those that require analysis. If you're working on an assembly line, picking vegetables or handling deposits and withdrawals over a bank counter, a machine might do your job better. If you're in charge of making sure those jobs get done, or marketing them, then a computer may help you, but it can't do the job for you.

Unfortunately, the definition of "repetitive" is going to keep shifting. "E-discovery" software, which can sort through email and documents looking for suspicious patterns, is already taking on a job traditionally done by paralegals and junior associates in law forms. IBM's "Watson" computer, which can respond to questions well enough to play "Jeopardy," is really designed to take over tasks from nurses and doctors, like taking medical histories. But you'll still need a human being to write a brief, argue in court, or conduct your surgery.

The jobs crisis is the first priority for most Americans, and rightly so. If you don't have a decent job in America, your entire life can unravel. Yet in the early stages of a crucial presidential campaign, we're spending far too much time asking the wrong questions: can we "hold onto" the jobs we have? Should we cut taxes? Does a college education pay off?

What we really need to do -- and what our political candidates better start doing -- is talk about what kind of jobs technology is likely to create, and what kind it destroys, and how our national policy can get ahead of that curve. The economy will work these issues out in the long run, but it'll be a lot less ugly if we actually start planning for the changes we know are coming. Anything else is like refusing to eat the ice cream from the refrigerator: a stand that doesn't change a thing.

More than 1,000 Afghans protested after hearing reports that NATO personnel improperly disposed of some Qurans at a base in Afghanistan.

Plans by NATO personnel to burn Qurans at Bagram Air Base north of Kabul have set off violent protests, with at least 1,000 demonstrators throwing stones and calling for US and NATO forces to leave Afghanistan.

That burning Qurans might anger Afghans has been made pretty clear before: In 2010 a US evangelical pastor, Rev. Terry Jones, threatened to burn Qurans outside his Florida church, and a year later, when followers of that US pastor actually carried out the threat. Eleven United Nations personnel were massacred in the northern Afghan city of Mazar-e Sharif in April 2011, after protestors broke into their compound, apparently seeking revenge for the Reverend Jones?s actions. A separate protest in the southern city of Kandahar at the time left nine people dead and dozens injured.

On Tuesday, the NATO commander, Gen. John R. Allen, released a statement apologizing for the planned burning, saying it was not intentional according to The New York Times:

?ISAF personnel at Bagram Air Base improperly disposed of a large number of Islamic religious materials which included Korans,? ?the statement said.

?When we learned of these actions, we immediately intervened and stopped them. The materials recovered will be properly handled by appropriate religious authorities.?

As if the travel, near-silent crowd and incredibly early start weren't enough to factor into betting UFC 144, along comes the weight snafu of Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. The former UFC light heavyweight champ whiffed badly on making weight at 205 pounds.

National Cathedral needs $20M+ fix (Politico)

The National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., still requires $18 million more in funds to repair the damage it suffered from an earthquake that hit the region last August, bringing the total cost estimate for all restoration work to more than $20 million.

The cathedral announced that in the first six months following the earthquake, a total of $2 million was raised to carry out the first phase of the restoration. It had originally estimated that $15 million would be needed for the complete repair work.

?The repair work, which includes intricate stone carving and detailed masonry, and will require significant scaffolding and large cranes to access the damaged areas, could be completed in five years if sufficient funds are raised immediately,? the cathedral said in a statement.

The national landmark sustained some serious damages from the 5.8 magnitude quake centered in Mineral, Va., last summer. The four main pinnacles on the central tower were damaged and since removed, while cracks still remain in the cathedral?s flying buttresses.

?We have a very long way to go, but this humbling generosity has allowed us to stabilize our building and return to our mission of serving as the spiritual home of the nation,? the Rev. Francis Wade, the cathedral?s interim dean, said of donations made so far. ?As we look toward preserving this national treasure, we are reminded how truly national this Cathedral is through the support and prayers of people from across the country and around the world.?

The following day in Game 7, with Denkinger now behind home plate, the demoralized Cardinals disgraced their way to an 11-0 loss, handing Kansas City its first and only World Series crown.

It'd be easy to point to World Series MVP Bret Saberhagen's two complete games and 0.50 ERA as the reason for the Royals' win. WASHINGTON (AP) ? Within the last week, authorities say, Amine El Khalifi's plan to wreak havoc was proceeding as hoped: An al-Qaida associate handed him an automatic weapon to kill security officers inside the U.S. Capitol. A bomb-laden vest would detonate the building. He would die as a martyr.

But there was a problem: The explosives were inert, the gun inoperable and the supposed al-Qaida member was actually an undercover officer, according to court documents.

El Khalifi was arrested Friday in a parking garage on his way to carry out an attack the FBI says he kicked around across multiple states for months, even detonating a practice bomb in a quarry and then asking for a bigger blast, all with varied targets in mind.

An FBI affidavit traces the evolution of the plot from a vague plan to prepare for the "war on Muslims" to more clearly articulated visions of attacking a restaurant and synagogue to, finally, a goal of obliterating the seat of American government.

The document alleges a weeks-long flurry of final activity by El Khalifi, monitored by the FBI and coordinated through an undercover agent, to scope out the building, train in explosives and arm himself for a suicide attack.

As El Khalifi, 29, was making a court appearance Friday on a terrorism-related charge, the FBI executed search warrants inside a gated residential community in Alexandria and at a red-brick ranch house in Arlington, though it wasn't immediately known what they found.

El Khalifi is scheduled to have a bond hearing Wednesday. A public defender at El Khalifi's initial appearance didn't return a phone message Saturday. If he is indicted and convicted, he could face life in prison.

Authorities have released only basic biographical details about El Khalifi and haven't described how they believe he became intent on destruction. He was born in Morocco and came to the United States in 1999, when he was 16 years old, overstaying his visitor visa and remaining in the country illegally, court papers say. He is unemployed and is not believed to be associated with al-Qaida.

In 2010, he aroused the suspicion of a former landlord, Frank Dynda, who leased him a one-bedroom apartment inside a brick building in Arlington before ultimately evicting him for not paying rent. He said El Khalifi lived with a woman, whose name was used to secure the lease. Dynda recalled the woman as Bulgarian and said he was under the impression they were married.

She had a job, but El Khalifi appeared not to have rent money.

Dynda said El Khalifi periodically received heavy boxes labeled "Books" from Baltimore and advertised his apartment as some sort of luggage business, though Dynda said he never saw any luggage there. The woman moved out, and two or three other men resembling El Khalifi began staying there, Dynda said. The rent checks stopped coming.

Dynda confronted El Khalifi for being a squatter, but he said El Khalifi told him he had a right to be there and threatened to assault him. Dynda called police, but he said officers advised him to treat El Khalifi like a legal tenant. He moved out that summer.

"He was going to harm me, and I think I'm very lucky to be alive today," Dynda said.

The investigation that led to El Khalifi's arrest started last January on a confidential informant's tip to the FBI. The informant described a meeting inside an Arlington apartment, where a person who produced an AK-47, two revolvers and ammunition said he equated the war on terror with a "war on Muslims" and urged the group to prepare for battle. El Khalifi, the FBI learned, expressed agreement.

The FBI doesn't believe he was conspiring with anyone else, and the court documents in El Khalifi's case don't give further details about the meeting in the Arlington apartment and the other people who were there. Police are investigating others with whom El Khalifi associated, but not because they believe the associates were part of a terror conspiracy, a counterterrorism official has told The Associated Press.

By December, authorities say the sting operation and El Khalifi's own plans were taking shape.

That month, he traveled to Baltimore with a man he knew as Hussien to meet a person who was introduced to him as an al-Qaida associate, authorities say. He told the man, Yusuf, that he planned to blow up a building just outside Washington in Alexandria, Virginia, that contained military offices. Handling the man's AK-47, he spoke of wanting to "use a gun and kill people face to face," according to the complaint.

Unbeknownst to El Khalifi, the man who called himself Yusuf was an undercover law enforcement officer. Hussien was an operative working undercover with investigators.

As the meetings continued, the plans evolved.

El Khalifi spoke in December of wanting to attack a synagogue and Army generals. But within days, he was settling on a new plan to bomb a Washington restaurant at lunchtime after a waiter told him that was the busiest time, the affidavit says.

On Jan. 8, in preparation for the restaurant attack and a planned al-Qaida attack on a military installation, authorities say he bought two jackets and a cell phone. He agreed to buy more phones, nails and glue to use in bomb-making and said he would be happy killing 30 people, authorities say.

Then he changed his mind a week later, saying he wanted to blow himself up inside the Capitol as an act of martyrdom and selecting the date of Feb. 17, prosecutors say. He went on something of a test run on Jan. 15, using a cell phone to detonate a test bomb at a West Virginia quarry. But instead of being satisfied with the explosion, the FBI says, he wanted a bigger bomb.

Court papers show the last two weeks were consumed with the planned attack on the Capitol. El Khalifi selected a location to be dropped off. He asked that even more explosives be strapped to his body. He wanted to ensure the bomb in his vest could be remotely detonated in case he faced security problems, authorities say.

The final planning happened in an Alexandria hotel room on Feb. 14, when authorities say "Yusuf" handed El Khalifi an automatic machine gun and showed him a jacket the suspect thought contained a bomb, the affidavit says. El Khalifi studied himself in the mirror with the weapon. He practiced shooting it. He discussed how he would be identified in a video al-Qaida would release after the attack.

By Friday, the plans were firm.

El Khalifi got into a van in northern Virginia with Yusuf and Hussien. The gun and vest he had asked for were inside. The van pulled into a parking garage near the Capitol. El Khalifi got out alone in preparation, investigators say, to carry out his plot.

Before he could leave the garage, he was arrested.

Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University have discovered that brain cells commonly thought to play a supporting role actually are critically important for the growth of brainstem neurons responsible for cardiorespiratory control. The discovery has profound implications for the prevention and treatment of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), the leading cause of death in children aged one month to one year.

The new discovery is published online in Neuroscience.

In their study, the OHSU team looked at glial cells, non-neuronal cells of the brain, and found that they very potently regulate growth of nerve cells in the brainstem. In fact, the glial cells actually inhibit the growth of brainstem neurons and may be as important for establishing neuronal networks as neurotrophic factors, a family of proteins essential for brain growth and survival. The OHSU study is the first to find that glial cells inhibit nerve cell growth.

"Previous research has shown that a common feature of the brains of SIDS babies is a dramatically increased number of glial cells," said Agnieszka Balkowiec, M.D., Ph.D., principal investigator and associate professor of integrative biosciences in the OHSU School of Dentistry. "Based on the results of our new study, the increase in glial cells in SIDS babies could be the cause of a compromised growth of brainstem neurons that control the cardiorespiratory function and, ultimately, cause death."

The new study also shows that glial cells direct the growth of brainstem neurons caused by BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor), another molecule found by the Balkowiec lab to play an important role in cardiorespiratory control.

"Our study shows that the picture is more complex than we had previously thought," said Balkowiec. "A better understanding of interactions between BDNF and glial cells could play a significant role in the development of treatment for SIDS, high blood pressure, and other disorders with a deficient cardiorespiratory control."

Assad calls for Syria vote, but steps up assault (AP)

BEIRUT ? As Syrian forces stepped up their assault Wednesday on rebellious cities, President Bashar Assad ordered a referendum on a new constitution that would create a multiparty system in a country that has been ruled by his autocratic family dynasty for 40 years.

Such a change would have been unheard of a year ago, and Assad's regime is touting the new constitution as the centerpiece of reforms aimed at calming Syria's upheaval. But after 11 months of bloodshed, with well over 5,000 dead in the regime's crackdown on protesters and rebels, Assad's opponents say the referendum and reforms are not enough and that the country's strongman must go.

"The people in the street today have demands, and one of these demands is the departure of this regime," said Khalaf Dahowd, a member of the National Coordination Body for Democratic Change in Syria, an umbrella for several opposition groups in Syria and in exile.

The White House also dismissed the referendum. Press secretary Jay Carney called the move "laughable" in light of ongoing brutality by the Syrian military and said it "makes a mockery" of the uprising.

Assad's call for a referendum, set for Feb. 26, also raises the question of how a nationwide vote could be held at a time when many areas see daily battles between Syrian troops and rebel soldiers.

Regime forces on Wednesday battered rebellious neighborhoods in the central city of Homs, pushing ahead with one of the deadliest assaults of the crackdown that activists say has killed hundreds in the past two weeks, aimed at crushing a city that has been a stronghold of dissent. Black smoke billowed from an oil pipeline in the city that was hit in the fighting, with each side blaming the other for attacking it. Activists reported at least eight killed across the country on Wednesday.

Amendments to the constitution once were a key demand by the opposition at the start of Syria's uprising, when protesters first launched demonstrations calling for change. Assad has also talked of holding parliament elections after the referendum. But after months of the regime's fearsome crackdown, the opposition dismisses any talk of reform, saying that they don't believe Assad will really loosen his iron grip on power and that his ouster is the only solution.

Russia, a top Syrian ally, has presented Assad's reform promises as an alternative way to resolve Syria's bloodshed. Earlier this month, Moscow and Beijing vetoed a Western- and Arab-backed resolution at the U.N. Security Council aimed at pressuring Assad to step down.

The current Syrian constitution enshrines Assad's Baath Party as the leader of the state. But according to the new draft, "the state's political system is based on political pluralism and power is practiced democratically through voting."

The draft also says the president can hold office only for a maximum of two seven-year terms. Assad, who inherited power from his father, has been in power for nearly 12 years. His father, Hafez, ruled for 30 years.

The Syrian constitution has been amended in the past ? most crucially, to allow Assad to take power in 2000.

After his father's death, Parliament quickly lowered the presidential age requirement from 40 to 34 so that the ruling Baath party could nominate Bashar Assad. His appointment was sealed by a nationwide referendum, in which he was the only candidate.

The new draft reinstates the requirement of 40 and mandates that any presidential candidate must have lived continuously in Syria for at least a decade. That would to rule out the candidacy of Syrian dissidents who have lived in exile out of fear for their lives.

The double veto by Russia and China at the U.N. infuriated the West and Arab states, which are now considering giving greater support to the Syrian opposition. Russia says it rejects any U.N. calls on Assad to step aside because they would prejudice attempts to find an internal solution.

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said Wednesday that his country ? one of the harshest international critics of Assad's crackdown ? is trying to rework the resolution to overcome Russian resistance. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said he will meet Juppe in Vienna on Thursday and discuss the idea.

The U.N. General Assembly will vote Thursday on an Arab-sponsored resolution strongly condemning human rights violations by the Syrian regime and backing an Arab League plan that calls for Assad to hand over power to his vice president. Russia cannot veto the measure in the Assembly, but the resolution would be nonbinding.

Lavrov praised Assad's referendum call, saying "a new constitution to end one-party rule in Syria is a step forward ... It is coming late unfortunately but better late than never." He said the international community should press on the opposition to enter negotiations with Assad.

The Syrian revolt started in March with mostly peaceful protests against the Assad family dynasty, but the conflict has become far more violent and militarized in recent months as army defectors fight back against government forces.

Many observers fear it is taking on the dimensions of a civil war. U.N. human rights chief Navi Pillay said this week that more than 5,400 people were killed last year alone, and that the number of dead and injured continues to rise daily in Syria.

In Homs, thick black smoke from the struck pipeline billowed out of what appeared to be a residential area, according to amateur video posted online. Activists accused regime forces of hitting the pipeline. It runs through the rebel-held neighborhood of Baba Amr, which has been shelled by regime troops for the past 12 days, according to two activist groups, the Local Coordination Committees and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The state news agency, SANA, blamed "armed terrorists" for Wednesday's pipeline attack. It said the pipeline feeds tanks in the Damascus suburb of Adra, which contribute in supplying gasoline to the capital and southern regions.

Also Wednesday, regime troops stormed several residential neighborhoods in the nearby city of Hama, activists said.

Protesters held anti-regime demonstrations in the northern city of Aleppo ? the country's most populous city ? which has largely stood by Assad and is a key base of his support. Amateur video posted online showed black smoke rising from the city, apparently from burning tires.

On Feb. 10, twin suicide bombs struck security compounds in Aleppo, killing 28 people and bringing significant violence for the first time to the city.

Regime forces also shelled the nearby town of Atareb, according to online videos posted by activists, which showed plumes of smoke rising above the town. The night before, pro-Assad forces and army defectors battled for hours in the town, activists and the state news agency SANA reported. The Observatory said nine civilians, four defectors and seven soldiers were killed. SANA put the toll at said five soldiers and nine gunmen.

The LCC said 13 people were killed in violence around the country on Wednesday, while the Observatory put the death toll at eight.
